How to get to Coimbra

The international airports are the Airport of Porto (about 100 km, north of Coimbra) and the Airport of Lisbon (at about 200 km, south of Coimbra). Both airports have regularly scheduled flights to and from all main European destinations as well as major world cities [see more...]. Coimbra has no international airport.

From Lisbon Airport

By Train

The recommended route is:

Lisbon Airport --metro/taxi--> Lisboa Oriente --train--> Coimbra-B

Arrive at Airport, and take the metro to Gare do Oriente. You need to buy a metro card (Viva Viagem/7 Colinas card) and charge it with tickets. One ticket is needed to go from the airport to Oriente (10-minute ride). Trains depart every 6-10 minutes.

At Oriente, take the train to Coimbra. Timetable: Lisbon-Porto line.

2nd class tickets cost ~25€ (AP/IC trains). You should choose either Alfa (AP) or Intercidades (IC). AP trains are more comfortable than IC trains and also quicker.

By Bus

Take metro/taxi to "Sete Rios" Bus Station. Express buses run hourly (~2.5 hours, ~15€). Check Rede Expressos or Flixbus.

By Airport Shuttle

Book direct shuttles via airportshuttle.pt or email coimbra@airportshuttle.pt.

By Car

Take A1 motorway to Coimbra Sul exit (~2 hours).

From Porto Airport

By Train

The recommended route is:

Porto Airport --metro/taxi--> Porto-Campanhã --train--> Coimbra-B

Take metro line E (Z4 ticket) to Campanhã station (33 minutes). Trains to Coimbra-B cost ~20€ (AP/IC). Timetable: same as Lisbon-Porto line.

By Bus

Take metro to "Campo 24 de Agosto" Bus Station. Express buses run hourly (~1.5 hours, ~15€). Check Rede Expressos or Flixbus.

By Airport Shuttle

Same as Lisbon: airportshuttle.pt or coimbra@airportshuttle.pt.

By Car

Take A1 motorway to Coimbra Norte exit (~1h15m).

Once you are in Coimbra

Coimbra has an accessible public bus system, making it easy to get around the city. Tickets can be purchased on the bus for 2€, or you can buy pre-purchased tickets for more cheap rates (check here), including 24h pass for only 4€. Alternatively, there are taxis, Uber and Bolt available, and also eletric scooters for renting.

Visa Requirements

Portugal is in the Schengen area (comprising 26 European countries), for which foreigners may need an entry visa. If you do need it, please make sure you apply for it well in advance before your departure. In the Schengen area, you may travel freely between member countries. However, we recommend you access the SEF (Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras – Immigration and Border Services) website and Portal das Comunidades Portuguesas. For more information or questions contact the Local Organizing Committee.
